NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The No. 18 Oswego State baseball team swept both ends of a doubleheader with Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon. Oswego improves to 4-2, while the Captains fall to 8-8 on the season.
Game One: Oswego 5, CNU 3
In the opening contest, Oswego jumped out to an early lead in the second inning and held on throughout despite a late-inning rally by the home team. Following a fielder's choice play, which allowed
Myles Kutscher to reach base,
Kyle Dinges doubled into the gap in right field to give Oswego a 1-0 advantage.
Dinges ended up rounding the bases on an error by the shortstop.
Lukas Olsson reached on the play and later scored as
Robert Donnelly knocked a base hit. Oswego held onto the 3-0 lead through 3.5 innings, before the Captains salvaged a run.
The Lakers answered back immediately with a pair of scores in the top of the fifth inning. After two quick outs to start the frame,
Kevin Hylas slapped an infield single and then proceeded to steal second.
John Barnes followed an
Eric Hamilton walk with a single to left, before Kutscher singled to the opposite field.
Mitchell Cavanagh earned his second win of the season (2-0) as he commanded the mound for seven innings, allowing just four hits and one earned. The junior struck out seven Captains and walked two.
Charles Arcuri made an appearance in relief, picking up the save with 1.1 innings tossed and a couple of strikeouts. He has now racked up 11 K's against 14 batters this season.
Game Two: Oswego 7, CNU 4
The Lakers followed the same blueprint in the backend contest, scoring early and pitching well. Hylas followed a
Wes Randall walk in the leadoff spot with a single. This turned into a three-bagger and a run due to an error by the left fielder. Hamilton popped a sacrifice fly in the next at bat to drive the score to 2-0.
Christopher Newport tied the score in the fourth after driving in a lone run in the third and fourth frames. Oswego reacquired the lead in the following inning, as the Lakers filled the bases and Donnelly drew the walk to bring a runner home, making it 3-2 Oswego.
During the seventh and eighth innings, the nationally-ranked Lakers plated a pair of insurance runs in each, which were particularly important after the Captains salvaged two runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Hamilton began the frame with a leadoff single through the left side. Later, Kutscher made it to base after getting plunked and proceeded to score via a stolen base and a Captain error, following Hamilton home. In the latter inning, another error led to more Laker runs scored as Randall and
Kyle Simmons made it around.
Tim Cronin earned the win, improving to 2-0 on the year. He allowed just two runs over six frames on the bump, while striking out five.
Brandon Schultzkie earned the save with a scoreless ninth. He struck out a pair of batters.
Oswego returns to action at 12 p.m. on Sunday for doubleheader action with Virginia Wesleyan College in Norfolk, Va.
