Lakers Sweep Weekend With Wins At Va. Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The No. 18 Oswego State baseball team completed its weekend road trip unscathed as it defeated Virginia Wesleyan College in both games of a nonconference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. Oswego improves to 6-2 on the year, while the Marlins fall to 4-6.

Game One: Oswego 10, Va. Wesleyan 4

Oswego was focused and ready to go from the first pitch. Leadoff hitter Wes Randall continued to find his groove early in the season, driving a ball to the gap and legging out a triple. Mike Dellicarri brought him home during the next at bat with an RBI groundout to first.

Also continuing his stellar start to the year and collecting his first of five hits on the afternoon, Eric Hamilton singled to right before advancing to second on a wild pitch. John Barnes finished the job, sending Hamilton home with a single to left field.

Following a pair of Marlin runs in the bottom of the inning, Oswego broke it open in the third. Hamilton started it up with a single to center, advancing to second on Barnes sacrifice fly. Mitchell Cavanagh made the switch to a batter for the game and ripped a clutch single through the right side to drive in Hamilton and reclaim the lead at 3-2.

Benefitting from an error, a walk and a Collin Thompson double, the Lakers collected four runs in the inning. Oswego would not relinquish the lead, adding two more in the sixth and one in the eighth.

Brian Nolan earned his first win of the year in six innings on the bump, allowing three earned and striking out five. Bobby Zywicki and Nick Demarco combined for the final three innings, while surrendering zero earned and ringing up three Marlins.

Game Two: Oswego 7, Va. Wesleyan 6 (Final/8)

Breaking from the blueprint, the Lakers were held off the board for three-and-two-thirds innings in the second contest. In a scoreless tie in the fourth, Kyle Dinges flied out to right, bringing Hamilton home from third.

The senior infielder earned first base after getting plunked to start the frame, before Barnes earned a walk and Myles Kutscher sacrificed them over to second and third with a bunt, respectively.

Following a furious four-run comeback by Virginia Wesleyan in the sixth, the Lakers and Marlins traded runs in the seventh, keeping the score tied at 6-6.

The scheduled seven-inning game was forced to extras and it was Robert Donnelly with the clutch gene on both sides of the box score. Starting with a base hit to center, the junior moved to second on a Lukas Olsson sac bunt, before using smart base running and scoring on an error.

Returning as a relief pitcher in the bottom half of the inning, Donnelly earned the win. He did not allow a hit and struck out one batter. Reston Pettit started, giving up no earned runs in six innings of work, earning the no decision.

Andrew Morano also made an appearance, bridging the gap between Pettit and Donnelly. The senior worked a full inning, allowing zero earned.

Baseball returns to the diamond for its annual Spring Break trip to the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. Oswego begins with a doubleheader at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla. (Field #4) at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
