OSWEGO, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked and top-seeded Oswego State men's ice hockey team lost a close 3-2 battle to second-seeded Plattsburgh in the title game of the SUNYAC Championship on Saturday in the Marano Campus Center Arena. Plattsburgh has earned the conference's automatic berth to the NCAA Championship while the Lakers await their tournament fate at 10:30 a.m. on Monday when the NCAA releases the full field.
Following the game,
Chris Raguseo and
Shawn Hulshof were both selected to the All-Tournament Team, as was Plattsburgh's Joe Drabin, Evan Lindquist, Antoine Desnoyers and Brady Rouleau – the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Trailing 2-0 early in the final period, Oswego broke on the board with a power-play goal from Hulshof on assists from
Kenny Neil and
Alex Botten. The Cardinals added a goal less than five minutes later that proved to be the game-winner. Neil made it interesting in the final minute, redirecting a Hulshof shot into the back of the net to make it a one-goal game. Botten was also in on the play, earning his second assist of the night.
It was an unlucky night for the Lakers, as several shots throughout the game ricocheted off posts and back into play. Seven minutes into the game, Oswego had a 3-on-1 but
Cameron Berry's blasted shot caromed off the near-post and out of the crease.
Mitch Emerson collected a rebound and fired a shot with Rouleau screened in net, only to find the same results as Berry. The Lakers were aggressive a 3:56 stretch in the second period where they were a man-down, generating three Grade-A, shorthanded chances but to no avail. Oswego's unfortunate storyline continued as
David Ferreira sped into the offensive zone with a good look on-goal, only to pummel the post with 5:35 remaining in the middle period.
Plattsburgh's first goal was the converse of Oswego's luck, as a puck was attempted to be sent behind the Laker net. It was unintentionally redirected off a defender's facemask and right to a Cardinals' stick, leaving Oswego goalie
Matt Zawadzki trying to recover from an unlucky bounce, which he could not overcome.
The Lakers outshot Plattsburgh 33-23 on the night and won 20 more faceoffs (42-22). Oswego's special teams had an interesting night, as the penalty kill was effective, holding Plattsburgh to 1-for-4, while its power-play unit was just 1-for-6.
Zawadzki made 20 saves on the night, suffering just his third defeat of the season.
