Lakers Overcome 3-Hour Rain Delay To Down Cardinals

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The No. 14 Oswego State baseball team defeated the Plattsburgh Cardinals 10-7 in the final game of a three-game set on Tuesday evening. Oswego improves to 17-6 overall and 8-1 in the SUNYAC, while Plattsburgh falls to 4-12 and 0-6 in league play.

No. 14 Oswego started off the scoring in the second inning as the Lakers strung together a pair of hits with two outs in the inning. Eli Holton slapped a single in the hole between third and short, before Josh Hoagland followed suit to the opposite side. In the next at-bat, JT Angora took a 2-0 pitch and drilled it to deep right-center field to drive in both Lakers. He made his way around the bases, eventually legging out a triple.

During the following frame, Oswego tallied two more runs to stretch the advantage to 4-1. Kyle Simmons began the inning with a lead-off infield single – as part of his four hits on the day – and was driven home as Eric Hamilton laced a double off the bottom of the left-field fence. Mike Dellicarri followed this up with a two-bagger of his own to score Hamilton.

Plattsburgh did much of its damage in the top half of the fifth, scoring four times to tie the contest at 5-5. Oswego answered back in the bottom of sixth with a run to reclaim the lead, before the rain started coming down in droves.

Following a three hour and nine minute rain delay, the teams retook the field and after Plattsburgh was able to tie the game again at 6-6, the Lakers put the contest away. Mitchell Cavanagh tallied a sacrifice fly before Dellicarri scored on an error for an 8-6 advantage.

Adding a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, John Barnes jacked a two-run shot to right-center field, scoring Hamilton.

John-Michael Guarino earned the win in relief as he pitched two innings and struck out four batters. Charles Arcuri came on in the ninth to record his third save of the season, dealing one inning and ringing up a pair of Cardinal batters.

Oswego returns to the diamond at 3 p.m. on Friday as it continues conference play with a three-game series at Brockport.
