OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team defeated the Fredonia Blue Devils – 5-4 and 5-1 – in both ends of a unique doubleheader situation. Oswego improves to 6-12 overall and 2-2 in the SUNYAC, while the Blue Devils fall to 11-13 and 1-7 in league play.
Game One: Oswego 5, Fredonia 4 (8 innings)
Rebecca Vilchez led the Lakers in the opening contest of the day, proving to be lights out for much of the contest. The freshman pitcher dealt 6.1 innings of no-hit ball, before a Fredonia pinch-hitter was able to do damage. Vilchez eventually earned the win over eight innings of work, while she did not allow an earned run and struck out six.
With Oswego leading 4-1 and two Blue Devils on base, via a fielder's choice and an error, Emily Shellenberger hit a home run to left field to tie the contest and force it into extras.
Jessica Roe was the hero for the Lakers as she brought home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth with a sacrifice fly, which scored
Katie Heselden. Earlier in the contest, Roe slapped an RBI single up the middle.
Game Two: Oswego 5, Fredonia 1 (6 innings)
Roe continued to propel the Lakers on the offense as she opened up game two with an RBI single to left. After Fredonia tied the game at 1-1,
Erin Sweeney doubled to left field to drive in
Katie Heselden and
Claire Hewitt.
Later in the game, Vilchez and
Melissa Mulvaney each drove home a Laker runner to increase the Oswego lead to 4-1 and 5-1, respectively.
On the mound, Roe earned the win. She pitched a complete game over six innings, as the game was called in the middle of the sixth, due to darkness. She allowed a single run and struck out six batters.
Oswego will return to action at 3 p.m. on Friday for another conference doubleheader against the Cardinals of Plattsburgh.
