Women's Lacrosse Drops Tilt to No. 17 Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's lacrosse team fell 16-6 at nationally-ranked Cortland on Saturday afternoon. Oswego is now 6-7 overall and 4-3 in the conference while the No. 17 Red Dragons improve to 11-3, 6-0.

Gemma O'Kane opened the scoring for both team, notching a tally just 2:22 into the tilt off a Teresa Shattuck assist. Over the next 10 minutes, Cortland scored twice to earn its first lead of the day at 16:34. Shattuck then found the back of the net unassisted at 11:54 for the equalizer and her 21st goal of the season. The Red Dragons then powered through five-straight goals before Shattuck scored unassisted again to send the teams to the locker room with the Lakers trailing 7-3.

Oswego began the second half well, grabbing two of the period's first three to pull to within three at 8-5. Those goals came from Toni Laneve on a Shattuck helper before senior Kendall Appelbaum recorded her 13th of the year unassisted. Again Cortland answered a Laker comeback threat with a five-goal run to put the game out of reach. Seanna Laneve scored Oswego's final goal – her third of the campaign – off a Shattuck pass with 7:19 remaining.

Angela Ponto was a stalwart in net throughout the contest, stopping 19 Red Dragons shots, just one shy of her career-high. The junior also collected a game-high five ground balls while causing two Cortland turnovers. Nicole Granteed and Kelsey Henderson each scooped up three loose balls while Danielle Walker led the squad with three caused turnovers.

Oswego won just shy of half the draws on the day (11-for-24), with Granteed, Henderson, Shattuck, Laneve and Appelbaum controlling two apiece while Sam Wallon grabbed one.

The Lakers will play its final regular season and league contest of the year at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Buffalo State. Oswego will look to solidify its playoff picture with a win prior to the SUNYAC Championship that is slated to start on Tuesday, May 2.
