OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's lacrosse team fell in heart-breaking fashion – 8-7 in overtime – to the Geneseo Knights on Saturday afternoon. Oswego falls to 3-7 and 0-2 in league play, while the Knights win their first SUNYAC contest of the year and improve to 7-2 overall.
Following back-to-back Geneseo timeouts, the road team took the ball down field. After they set up their offense, Alex Leuze received the ball, juked a Laker and fired a shot past
Wyatt Russo's left leg to score the game-winner.
Oswego controlled possession for the first two-and-a-half minutes of the extra period, but surrendered it on a turnover. The Knights had an advantage with a fast-break chance, but the home team was able to get enough men downfield to slow the momentum.
Leuze started the scoring on the afternoon, before the Lakers'
Mark Niechcial and
Zach Anderson responded to grab the lead.
Pat Kenneally and
Kyle Bacon also notched scores in the first half to pull within one of the Knights at the break.
During the third period, defense starred as neither team was able to net a score. Both teams were physical in their defense third to stifle any offensive opportunities.
Bobby Emerson began the final period of regulation with the game-tying score, but Geneseo immediately answered back with a pair of goals to grab a 7-5 lead. The Lakers battled the adversity and responded with two tallies from the sticks of
Tim Schof and Emerson just 33 seconds apart. Schof was also credited with two assists on the afternoon.
Russo played the entire 62:31 in the goal and made nine saves in the loss.
Men's lacrosse returns to action on Wednesday evening as they travel to the North Country for a solo SUNYAC contest against the Bears of Potsdam. Play will be under the lights, beginning at 7 p.m.
