OSWEGO, N.Y. – The fourth-seeded Oswego State women's lacrosse team dropped an 8-7 contest to the No. 5 Oneonta Red Dragons in the first round of the 2017 SUNYAC Women's Lacrosse Championship. Oswego falls to 7-8 to wrap up the season, while Oneonta improves to 9-6 and advances to play top-seed and nationally-ranked Brockport.
Entering the second half with the score knotted at 2-2,
Gemma O'Kane gave the Lakers the lead with a juke and score off a pass from
Teresa Shattuck. Just 14 seconds later, Oswego extended its lead to 4-2 with a tally from
Toni Laneve, which was her 26
th of the season.
Shattuck's assist on the first goal of the second half was her 54
th of the season, which broke the standing single-season program record. The most current standing was 53, set by
Erannan Shattuck during the 2016 campaign.
Teresa Shattuck added two more assists later in the contest to bring her season total to 56.
After the Lakers struck quickly and efficiently in the opening minutes of the second half, Oneonta responded with force. The Red Dragons scored six-straight goals to grab an 8-4 lead with just under 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
Laneve led the Lakers rebound effort and charge, effectively bringing the home team back within striking distance with help from Shattuck. She scored twice, about three and a half minutes apart, to bring Oswego within a pair of goals with 3:08 remaining.
As the seconds on the game clock ticked away, a stingy defensive effort gave the Lakers hope. O'Kane pressed the Oneonta goalie as she left the crease with the ball in her stick, forcing a turnover.
Montana Garrett scooped up the loose ball on the near side of the field, charged the empty cage, shot and scored, just inside the far post.
With less than two minutes remaining, the Lakers continued to press. They were unable to force another turnover as the Red Dragons ran out the clock.
Both teams were fairly evenly matched. Oswego and Oneonta nearly matched in shot totals as the latter took 18 as opposed to the Lakers' 17. The teams tied 8-8 in draw controls won, while neither was able to convert a free-position shot. In clear attempts, Oswego converted 15-of-17 (88%), while the Red Dragons completed 81 (13-of-16) percent of their attempts.
Angela Ponto took the tough luck loss in the net, despite withstanding a barrage of shots from the opposing squad. She made four saves in goal, which was good enough to earn her a share of history. The junior goalie made 164 saves during the season, overtaking Nikki Greco (163) with the most saves in a single season in program history.
