OSWEGO, N.Y. – The men's soccer team continued its offensive onslaught on Sunday, closing its Oswego State Classic with a 6-1 win over SUNY Purchase at Laker Turf Stadium. Oswego is now 2-0 on the year and is outscoring its opponents 11-1. After scoring five in the season-opener, the Lakers went for six on Sunday, its most since a 6-4 victory over St. John Fisher College exactly 11 years ago to the day.
Purchase actually opened the scoring with a penalty-kick goal at 3:21 after a Laker hand ball was called in the box. At 19:41, Oswego would even the score with a penalty kick of its own. A foul on the Panthers in the box led to a
Connor Lunduski tally, beat the goalie to the left post despite the goalie guessing correctly.
Later in the first half,
Thomas Osborn sent a ball through the box to the foot of
Logan Sperano who ripped a shot past three defenders to give the Lakers their first lead of the day. Oswego would take a two-goal edge into the break as Lunduski passed from outside the top left of the box to
Karebo Wilson on the right for a goal at 35:55.
In the second half, the Lakers kept the momentum as Lunduski continued to rack up points. A beautiful outlet throw from goalie
Brian Terra led to Lunduski running nearly the length of the field before dishing to
Hassan Musa for a goal at 54:57. Lunduski added his fourth point of the day less than seven minutes later off a pass from freshman
Zachary Ericson. Ericson lofted a beautiful pass to the head of Lunduski who redirected the ball with his noggin to make it 5-1 Oswego at 61:16. The Lakers' final score of the contest came at 66:07 as Musa notched his second goal of the day on a free-kick from just outside the 18-yard box.
Oswego was rarely challenged on the defensive end of the field, only allowing two shots on-goal as Terra finished with one save. It was the freshman's first collegiate victory as he played 84:45 of the contest. Classmate
Thomas Pupatelli appeared in his first game as a college athlete, holding down the net in the final 5:15 of the game.
The Lakers outshot Purchase 26-3 on the day and took seven corner kicks while the Panthers were not awarded any.
Men's soccer will continue their season at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday as they travel to Clinton, N.Y. to face the Continentals of Hamilton College.
