Top-10 Battle Ends in Tie for Men's Hockey

UTICA, N.Y. - In a battle of top-10 programs, senior Mitch Herlihey scored a late goal to help the No. 5/5 Oswego Lakers men's hockey team tie the No. 7/9 Utica Pioneers 3-3 on the road on Saturday afternoon.  With the result, Oswego's record goes to 12-3-2 while Utica is now 13-3-1.

The Pioneers kicked things off in the first period with a power-play goal by Daniel Fritz at the 10:13 mark.  He was assisted by Zach Borsoi and Kyle Lajeunesse.  Oswego would answer back just 29 seconds later as Michael Gillespie would score on assists from Herlihey and Carter Allen.  Oswego would close out the period on a five-on-three power-play, but the score remained 1-1.

Mitch Emerson would capitalize for the Lakers just 1:02 into the second period on a power-play goal assisted by Aaron Huffnagle and Cameron Berry.  Oswego would maintain that edge until 13:56 when Utica would score the equalizer on a goal from Anthony McVeigh.  He was assisted by Lajeunesse and Brett Szajner.

Utica would pull back out front in the third on a goal by Roman Ammirato, assisted by Dalton Carter, at the 16:20 mark.  With just 29 seconds left and the goalie pulled, Herlihey would take a pass from Josh Zizek and beat Utica goalie Patrik Vertanin.  Joseph Molinaro also collected an assist on the play.

Oswego had a chance late in the overtime as a turnover by the Pioneers in the Oswego zone with 19 seconds remaining set up Molinaro on a breakaway, but Vertanin was able to apply enough pressure to force the the sophomore wide of the net.

Oswego outshot the Pioneers 34-31 and both teams were 1-3 on the power play.  David Richer made 28 saves in net for the Lakers.

The team returns to the ice on Friday when they travel to Morrisville State for a 7 p.m. faceoff.
