BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's basketball team fell victim to a late 24-11 run by Brockport in the final eight minutes to the tune of a 74-70 loss in a Saturday road loss at Vlogianitis Gymnasium. With the defeat, Oswego drops to 9-10 overall and 6-6 in the SUNYAC while the Golden Eagles improve to 14-4, 9-2.
Oswego and Brockport were fairly even in several statistical categories on Saturday, but the Golden Eagles' ability to convert an uncharacteristic 20 turnovers by the Lakers into 31 points proved to be the difference. Despite that statistic, however, Oswego controlled the game for nearly three quarters of the way to the final buzzer. At halftime, the Lakers possessed a 12-point lead and grew that to as many as 15 less than five minutes into the second stanza. Leading 59-50 with exactly eight minutes remaining, Oswego was unable to stop the Golden Eagle comeback effort in that final 24-11 run.
A day removed from recording a career-high 25 points,
Brandan Gartland stayed hot with another 20-point performance, hitting the mark on the money. The sophomore's shooting from the floor continues to amaze, going 6-for-7 on Saturday, including a perfect 5-for-5 from distance to put his season 3-point percentage at 48.6. Gartland also had three assists to just one turnover.
Three other Lakers finished in double figures, with
Liam Sanborn (15),
Tyler Pierre (12) and
Josh Ivey (10) combining for 37 points. Pierre led the Lakers on the glass with nine rebounds, just one shy of a double-double.
Oswego now heads to the North Country for its final road trip of the regular season, opening with Plattsburgh at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The Lakers will close the campaign on a four-game home stand following next weekend's pair of conference outings.
