Five Lakers Score in Blanking of Wilkes on Sun.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Oswego State women's ice hockey team moved to 2-0 to start the 2018-19 campaign, winning its first two games for the third-consecutive season. Oswego blanked Wilkes University on the road Sunday afternoon.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Oswego 5, Wilkes 0
  • Location: Toyota SportsPlex – Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
  • Records: Oswego (2-0)  |  Wilkes (0-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Oswego recorded five unanswered goals over the 60-minute game, starting with a tally in the opening five minutes.
  • For the second-straight day, Annika Neufeld-Kreider notched the tilt's first goal, bringing the freshman's career total to two in as many games.
  • Neufeld-Kreider's eventual game-winner came in unassisted fashion at 4:56 of the first.
  • Less than 10 minutes later, Oswego found the back of the net again, this time on a Philomena Teggart score off a Skylar Byrne assist.
  • It was Teggart's second day in a row with a goal as well, while Byrne's helper was the first of her career after registering a goal on Saturday.
  • For nearly the next 30 minutes of game time – including the entire second period – neither team was able to light the lamp but Oswego exploded for three goals in the final period.
  • Following a Wilkes checking penalty, Emma Morisette was able to score on the extra-skater opportunity, with assists from Eryn Stewart and Kate Randazzo.
  • Randazzo, the Laker junior captain, collected her second goal of the season just minutes later with an unaided tally at 7:56, pushing Oswego's lead to a comfortable 4-0.
  • To round out the scoring, freshman Katelynn Ferguson found the goal column for the first time in her collegiate career after recording an assist in Saturday's 10-1 at King's College.
  • Ferguson's goal was assisted by senior Victoria Rankin for the Yellowknife, N.W.T native's first point of the season.
  • Hannah Lindey earned her first career start in net for the Lakers, stopping all three shots she faced en route to her first-career shutout.
  • In all, Oswego outshot Wilkes 132-9, including a 66-3 advantage in on-goal attempts.
  • Oswego also won the faceoff battle by a considerable margin (38-20) while its penalty-kill unit was a perfect 3-for-3 against the Colonels.
WHAT'S NEXT

The Lakers continue its four-game road trip with a pair of contests at Buffalo State. Oswego's first game with the Bengals is at 5 p.m. on Friday and will jump-start the Northeast Women's Hockey League (NEWHL) slate.
