Volleyball Comes Back To Upset Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y. - The Oswego State Volleyball team came back from a 2-1 deficit to knock off the three-time defending conference champions on the road in the opening round of the 2018 SUNYAC Championship Tournament.  It's the first time the Lakers have advanced to the semifinal round since the 2015 season when they defeated Fredonia in five sets in the opening round.

THE BASICS
  • Final Score:  Oswego 3, Brockport 2 (21-25, 25-23, 9-25, 26-24, 15-9)
  • Location:  Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium, SUNY Brockport, Brockport, N.Y.
  • Records:  Oswego (19-13, 4-5 SUNYAC) | Brockport (19-12, 7-2 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first set was a back-and-forth affair with multiple ties and lead changes until 21-21.  Brockport would score the final four points on two kills and two Oswego attacking errors to grab the momentum.
  • Oswego got down 4-1 in the second before an 11-3 run put them in control highlighted by a four-point service run by sophomore right side Melissa Lussier.  Brockport would tie the score late at 21-21 again, but kills by outside hitter Shauna O'Flaherty and Alison Sullivan would propel the Lakers to the equalizer and tie the match at one set apiece.
  • Brockport came out strong in the third set, holding Oswego to six kills while getting 14 of their own and cruising to a 25-9 victory in the set.
  • A 9-1 run to open the fourth gave Oswego their confidence back, but an injury forced Oswego into an unconventional lineup and the Golden Eagles would eventually grab the lead at 18-17.
  • Things were far from settled as the Lakers would go up 20-18 before Brockport answered and took a 23-22 lead on a double block.
  • Kills by seniors Ariana Wright and Alison Berger, sandwiched around a block by Sarah Massie and Sullivan gave Oswego the 26-24 win to take the match to the decisive set.
  • The Lakers got up 4-1 on four Golden Eagle errors and took an 8-5 lead into the side switch on kills by Massie and Lussier.  The closest the match would get was 13-8, but two kills from Sullivan ended it and allowed Oswego to advance.
  • Oswego's defense, which ranked first against SUNYAC teams in digs per set, recorded 122 digs in the match.  Sophomore Emily Costa led the Lakers with 26 while O'Flaherty had 21 and Mira Legnon-Bozman had 19.
  • Both setters recorded a double-double with Berger getting 26 assists and 16 digs and Julia Flohr getting 10 assists and 14 digs.
