NORFOLK, Va. – The Oswego State softball team split a pair of games to open the season on Saturday. First, the Lakers defeated the College of New Rochelle in dominating fashion, 16-0. In their second game, the Lakers fell to No. 13 Randolph-Macon, 9-2. With the split, Oswego opens its season at 1-1 before heading to Florida for its eight-game slate.
Oswego put together a string of singles in the first inning to jump out to a 5-0 lead over the Blue Angels. The Lakers tacked on three more runs in the next two innings, with two coming from a
Gabriella Vertuccio home run, before unleashing an offensive explosion in the fifth. The team piled on five more runs before
Angela Frampton sealed the deal with a 3-run homer.
Not only did Frampton provide power at the plate, but she was dominant on the mound as well. In four innings of work against the Blue Angels, the junior did not allow a run or walk.
Jessica Roe closed the game out for the Lakers with a scoreless inning.
The Lakers took advantage of the opening inning against the Yellow Jackets as well.
Sarah McCullough knocked in Frampton and
Rebecca Vilchez in the first, pulling the Lakers within one of Randolph-Macon. Oswego was within striking distance for much of the game, but the Yellow Jackets were able to put up four runs in the sixth to bring the score to 9-2. Frampton tossed 1.1 scoreless innings of relief to end the game.
Next, the Lakers will begin their Florida road trip with a game against William Paterson University at 3:45 p.m. on Monday.
