Strong Pitching Propels Baseball to Victory

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Behind strong pitching from a trio of Lakers, the Oswego State baseball team rallied for an 8-3 nine-inning victory over Wartburg College on Sunday morning at Polk State College's Bing Tyus Yard.  The win improves Oswego's record to 4-2 on the season while Wartburg falls to 6-3.

The pivotal inning for the Lakers was the eighth when they turned a 3-2 deficit into a 6-3 lead.  Senior Zach Whelan started things off with a leadoff single and moved to third when Kevin Hylas followed with a single of his own.  Brandon Nicholson flied out to right to plate Whelan and advance Hylas to second.  Mike Dellicarri walked and Hylas advanced to third on a wild pitch before centerfielder John Barnes deliver a towering double to left center that scored the go-ahead runs.  Senior Eli Holton doubled in the next at-bat to plate Barnes and add some breathing room for the Lakers' pitching staff.

Robert Donnelly pitched well for Oswego while going six innings and giving up only one earned run.  Junior Brad Wroblewski (1-0) came on in relief to pitch two innings to earn the win.  Matt Bowman threw a clean final inning to cement the victory.

Whelan led the offense with three hits (3-for-4) while Hylas and Holton each had a pair.  Barnes led the team with three runs batted in on the day.  Serving as leadoff batter, Hylas reached base in four of his five trips to the dish to force the Wartburg starting pitcher out after five innings.

Oswego is back in action tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. as they take on Washington University of St. Louis from the University Athletic Association (UAA) and again at 3 p.m. against No. 1 UMass-Boston from the Little East Conference.  Both games will be played back at Polk State College.
