AUBUNRDALE, Fla. - Junior outfielder
Mike Dellicarri had big day at the plate in helping the Oswego State baseball team to a 9-5 victory over the Wheaton (Mass.) Lyons on Wednesday morning. Dellicarri had a first inning 2-run double and a seventh inning 2-run homerun to propel the Lakers to the win. Oswego improves to 5-4 while Wheaton (Mass.) falls to 4-4 on the season.
Oswego took a 2-0 lead in the first when
Brandon Nicholson walked and
Ryan Enos reached on an error. Dellicarri followed with his first two RBI of the game to put Oswego in control. Both teams added a run in the third inning with Oswego's coming by way of
John Barnes reaching on an error and plating Enos who had doubled earlier in the inning.
The fifth inning was action-packed for both teams as Wheaton started down a run at 3-2, but put three on the scoreboard to go up 5-3. Oswego answered immediately in the bottom half when Dellicarri started a two-out rally with a single.Â
Eli Holton walked to move Dellicarri over to second and Barnes followed with a 2-run double to tie the game.Â
Myles Kutscher singled to drive in Barnes in the next at-bat and keep Oswego in front.
The Lakers got some insurance in the seventh when Enos doubled to start the inning and Dellicarri crushed a ball over the fence in straight-away center field to put the team up 8-5. Oswego added another run in the bottom of the eighth when
Lukas Olsson doubled and was sacrificed around by
Zach Whelan and pinch-hitter
Kevin Hylas.
Junior
Nick Demarco earned his first win of the season as the Lakers used a platoon of pitchers to keep the Lyons' offense in check.Â
Matt Bowman came on in relief in the eighth and finished the game for his first save of the season. He struck out three of the five batters he faced and didn't allow a runner to reach base.
With his 3-for-4 day, Dellicarri now leads the team in hits (13), runs (12), homeruns (3), RBI (15) and total bases (27). He is also third in batting average (.371).
The baseball team is off until Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. when they open up conference play with a doubleheader against Fredonia back at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Florida.
