Ponto Reaches 500 Career Saves in Road Victory

POTSDAM, N.Y. - Senior goalkeeper Angela Ponto recorded her 500th career save and Gemma O'Kane and Brigid Regin recorded hat tricks to help the Oswego State lacrosse team cruise past Potsdam by a score of 11-4 on Tuesday afternoon.  With the win, the Lakers improve to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the SUNYAC while Potsdam falls to 4-5 (1-1).

After surrendering the opening goal to the Bears in the opening few minutes, Oswego used a five-goal run to take charge of the contest.  Montana Garrett got things started just twenty-two seconds after the Potsdam goal with a score on an assist from Teresa Shattuck.  O'Kane scored the next two goals of the game, the first assisted by Shattuck and the second unassisted.  Toni Laneve and Regin concluded scoring in the half with unassisted goals to give the Lakers a 5-1 advantage heading into the intermission.

Momentum stayed with Oswego in the second half with a pair of free position goals by Regin (21:12) and Riley Jaquin (20:16) in the first ten minutes of action.  Regin's third goal of the game at the 16:13 mark extended the Laker lead out to 8-1.

The game became out of reach for the Bears when Garrett scored her second of the game at the 13:34 mark, Sami Duncan scored her first of the season thirty-three seconds later and O'Kane her third of the game a few minutes later at 11:56.  Potsdam recorded the last three goals of the game to end the scoring at 11-4.

Ponto recorded six saves in the contest to earn the win and give her 503 saves for her career.  She already owned the program record, but continues to add distance to the previous record of 388 saves.

Oswego dominated the game statistics with a 33-18 edge in shots and a 19-12 advantage in groundballs.

The lacrosse team returns to action at 1 p.m on Saturday when they travel to Oneonta for the second game of a four-game conference road trip.
