GENESEO, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team fell to third seed Oneonta, 3-2, in an 11-inning battle on Thursday afternoon. Oswego moves to 19-14 on the season with the outcome, while Oneonta improves to 20-13.
After a quick first inning, the Lakers put a run on the board in the second.
Erin Sweeney walked to lead off the inning, and
Jessica Roe moved her into scoring position with a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt. The next batter,
Taylor DuBois, came through with a clutch single to right field to send Sweeney home.
The Lakers extended their lead in the third.
Madelana Wrubel started things off with a hard-hit single that reached left field.
Angela Frampton followed up with another single to left to put runners on first and second for
Gabriella Vertuccio. Vertuccio's groundout then moved them over to second and third. Later in the inning, with two outs, Roe smacked a single to the shortstop to allow Wrubel to come home.
Starting pitcher
Rebecca Vilchez, the reigning SUNYAC Pitcher of the Week, blew through the Oneonta lineup for the first five innings, allowing just one hit. In the sixth, Roe started off the inning with a terrific catch in shallow right field, but Oneonta managed to tie the game with a pair of hits and an error.
With neither team scoring in the seventh, the game headed to extras. Both teams' bats were quiet for the next three innings as the starters battled. In the 11
th however, Oneonta managed to break the tie with a pair of hits and an error.
Oswego returns to action at 9 a.m. on Friday when it faces top seed Geneseo.
