Lussier, Sullivan Power Lakers Past Clarkson

OSWEGO, N.Y. - Sophomore right side hitter Melissa Lussier had nine kills, four aces and three blocks while senior Alison Sullivan had 13 kills and four blocks to lead the Oswego State Volleyball team past the defending Liberty League Champion, Clarkson University, on Wednesday night by a 3-1 margin.

THE BASICS
  • Final Score:  Oswego 3, Clarkson 1 (25-16, 20-25, 25-23, 25-14)
  • Location:  Max Ziel Gymnasium, Laker Hall, SUNY Oswego - Oswego, N.Y.
  • Records:  Oswego (12-6), Clarkson (7-7)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lakers jumped out to a 13-7 lead in the first on a pair of kills and blocks by both senior Ariana Wright and junior Lauren Fie.
  • Three kills by Sullivan and a pair by Lussier would help close out the opener.
  • In the second set, the teams would have nine ties and seven lead changes until the score was 19-19, when Clarkson would capitalize on five Laker errors to even the match.
  • Clarkson tried to keep momentum in the third by taking a 12-7 lead and forcing an Oswego timeout.  Lussier would answer with a kill and a seven-point serving run to put the Lakers up 15-12.
  • The Golden Knights would counter with a seven-point run of their own to regain the lead at 19-15 and hold a 21-17 edge late.  Kills by junior setter Julia Flohr, two by Sullivan, and two by junior Shauna O'Flaherty would knot things at 23-23.  An O'Flaherty block and service ace by setter Alison Berger would give Oswego the pivotal third set.
  • It was all Oswego in the fourth as the team raced out to a 10-2 lead behind tough serving by sophomore Mira Legnon-Bozman and Lussier and cruised to a 25-14 score in the final set.
  • O'Flaherty was big off the bench with seven kills and no errors on 19 attack attempts.  Freshman Skylar Bechard had 20 digs to anchor the defense.
  • With four more aces, Berger extends her team lead in the category to 42 on the season - more than twice as many as the next closest Laker.
  • With 12 wins on the year, the Lakers have already matched last season's total (12-17) with one month left in the regular season.
