Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Oswego Battles Tough in 2OT Loss to #5 Oneonta

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's soccer team took No. 5/11 Oneonta to the brink in double overtime on Friday afternoon, eventually suffering its first SUNYAC setback to the nationally-ranked Red Dragons. Oswego's defense and goalie play was outstanding throughout, block or saving several Oneonta shot attempts.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Oneonta 2, Oswego 1 (2OT)
  • Location: Laker Turf Stadium – Oswego, N.Y.
  • Records: Oneonta 11-1-0 (4-0-0 SUNYAC)  |  Oswego 7-4-1 (2-1-1 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trailing 1-0 with less than 10 minutes to play in regulation, Oswego was awarded a free kick just inside the midfield line.
  • Sophomore Caleb Munski booted a ball into the right side of the box and Jack Van Pelt fought for a header. The ball slipped behind the senior but an errant headed clear attempt found its way back to Van Pelt's foot. In one fluid motion, Van Pelt struck the ball with his left foot past the diving goalie and inside the right post. The Van Pelt goal knotted the game at 1-1 in the 82nd minute.
  • Oneonta scored first at 63:53 when the leading scorer in the SUNYAC, Witman Hernandez, was able to dribble right in the box before switching a shot back left for his 12th tally of the year.
  • After a scoreless 10-minute first overtime period, the Red Dragons' Hernandez was at it again. He scored at 3:24 off a pass from Matt Howe, who completed a two-man transition down the far sideline from Oneonta's defensive half of the field.
  • Goalie Brian Terra made five saves for the Lakers and was supports by a solid back line that consisted of Cam Neira, Brendan Murphy, Ryan Contreras and Munski. The quartet blocked several shots on the afternoon to keep the workload manageable for their senior keeper.
WHAT'S NEXT

Oswego will host New Paltz at 1 p.m. on Saturday in more conference action. Prior to the game, the Lakers will honor their graduation class for Senior Day.
