Lakers Earn Fifth-Straight Conference Victory

FREDONIA, N.Y. - The Oswego State volleyball team earned a hard-fought 3-0 victory at Fredonia to move their win-streak to six games, with five of those coming against conference opposition.  Senior Lauren Fie led the team with 11 kills and junior Emily Costa helped hold one of the best serving teams in the SUNYAC at bay.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The teams traded blows early on before junior Melissa Lussier served a pivotal run to put Oswego up 17-12 halfway through the first set.
  • Fredonia chipped away at the lead, coming as close as 24-23, but a missed serve gave the Lakers the 1-0 lead.
  • Oswego took the second set 25-20 and found themselves down 24-19 late when Costa served five straight points to give the Lakers renewed life.
  • After fending off a set point, the Lakers got a block from Fie and a Blue Devil violation to close out the match.
  • Lussier, Shauna O'Flaherty and Sarah Massie each had six kills for the Lakers.
  • On the defensive side, O'Flaherty (13), Lussier (13) and Costa (12) all reached double-digit digs.
  • For the fifth time in the six-match win streak, senior setter Julia Flohr had a double-double with 26 assists and 13 digs.
  • The victory secures a spot in the 2019 SUNYAC Championships as both Fredonia and Potsdam were eliminated from contention today.
WHAT'S NEXT

The Lakers host Wells in a non-conference match on Wednesday at 7 p.m. before one final weekend of conference action that will have major implications on seeding as Brockport (5-2 SUNYAC) and Geneseo (7-0 SUNYAC) visit Max Ziel Gymnasium.
