Huge Second Period Keys Victory Over Cortland

OSWEGO, N.Y. - The #6 Oswego State hockey team used four unanswered goals in the second period as the catalyst for their 6-3 victory in the season opener against Cortland.  Junior Max Novick had two goals and an assist in the pivotal run to lead the Lakers while senior Mitch Emerson also had three points in the win.

  • Records:  Oswego 1-0 (1-0 SUNYAC) | Cortland 0-1 (0-1 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Oswego got on the scoreboard at 7:13 of the first period when Emerson won a battle along the boards and slid a pass to Carter Allen in the middle.
  • Allen made a move to goal then dropped a pass to Colton Fletcher who snapped a shot by the Cortland goalie on the short side.
  • Later in the period, at the 16:07 mark, Cortland would tie it up on an unassisted goal.
  • The Lakers began their run right away in the second period when Jody Sullivan took a cross-ice feed from senior captain Josh Zizek and found the open net at 1:29.  Senior Chris MacMillan also notched an assist on the goal.
  • Goal number three was a beauty as senior Joseph Molinaro charged down the left side of the Cortland zone, centered a pass to classmate Joey Scorpio, who touched a pass out wide to Novick for a top-shelf shot into the right corner of the net.
  • Sophomore Tyson Kirkby got his first of the season when Novick took a pass into the middle and put a shot towards goal that was deflected by Emerson.  Kirkby tracked the deflection and put it in to give the Lakers a 4-1 lead.
  • Just before the end of the period and shorthanded, Zizek carried into the Cortland zone, fed Novick in the slot who fired a rocket past the Cortland goalie.
  • Emerson added some insurance at 1:57 of the third period on a goal assisted by junior Tanner Spink.
  • Cortland got a pair of goals in the last five minutes, but the Lakers were able to close out the win.

  • On power play chances, Oswego went 0-for-3 while Cortland was held to 0-for-4.
  • Senior goalie David Richer made 26 saves in the contest to secure his twenty-sixth career win in the green and gold.
  • This is the fourth year in a row that the Lakers have won their season-opening contest.
