Lakers Shutout Rival Cardinals

LEXINGTON, S.C. -- The Oswego State baseball team started off conference play on a high note with a shutout win against rival Plattsburgh.

THE BASICS
  • Results: Oswego 7, Plattsburgh 0
  • Location: Lexington, S.C.
  • Records: Oswego (3-2, 1-0 SUNYAC), Plattsburgh (2-4, 0-1 SUNYAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cardinals threatened to score in the top of the third inning with a runner on third and two outs. Lakers' pitcher Matt Bowman was able to strikeout the Plattsburgh batter, leaving the go ahead run stranded on third.
  • Oswego took the lead in the bottom of the third off a triple to deep-right field from senior Mike Dellicarri resulting in a Ryan Enos score.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, freshman Paul Tammaro made his way to the first base off a single up the middle. After an intentional walk to Dellicarri, junior Lukas Olsson singled through the left side driving in Tammarro.
  • Plattsburgh looked to tie the game at two in the top of the seventh inning with the tying run on second. Again, Bowman retired the Plattsburgh batter leaving two stranded on base.
  • The Endicott, N.Y. finished the game with eight innings pitched and seven strikeouts.
  • The Lakers would grow their lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, off an error by the Cardinals, attempting to throw out Brandon Nicholson at third. Oswego was able to bring in Tammaro from second base.
  • The squad recorded two more runs on a fly ball off the bat of Matt Deblasio that got dropped in right field. A single from Luke Simmons and a double from Enos would drive in two more runners, extending the Laker lead to seven.
  • The Cardinals would make one last push to come back with runners on third and second with two outs. Closer Kieran Finnegan would retire the Cardinal batter and keep the Laker shutout intact.
