Baseball's Seven Run Second Inning Not Enough

LEXINGTON, S.C. – The nationally-ranked Oswego State baseball team dropped a nine-inning affair to Trinity College (Conn.) on Wednesday afternoon. Oswego's explosive second inning had the Lakers poised for victory, but the Bantams answered over the next three innings to reverse momentum and steal the win.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Trinity 11, Oswego 7
  • Location: Lexington County Baseball Stadium – Lexington, S.C.
  • Records: Trinity 6-2  |  Oswego 6-4
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Following an inning and a half of scoreless baseball, Oswego exploded for a seven-run second inning to gain control of the contest.
  • Junior Lukas Olsson led-off the frame with a solo shot to left field.
  • With two outs and the bases chock full, following a Brandon Nicholson walk, a Jonathan Luppens single through the left and a Ryan Weiss walk, Ryan Enos walked to make it a 2-0 contest.
  • The third Laker run came via a throwing error by the Trinity third baseman on a batted ball by Paul Tammaro, scoring Luppens.
  • After Mike Dellicarri walked to bring in another Oswego runner, Olsson notched two more RBI in the inning, this time on a single up the middle to plate Tammaro and Enos.
  • The final run of the second – which proved to be the final run for the Lakers in the tilt – came on a wild pitch that allowed Dellicarri to cross home.
  • Trinity immediately responded with a run in the third and then matched Oswego's second-inning total with a seven-run fourth to claim its first lead of the game. The Bantams would add a run in the fifth and two more in the eighth to put the contest out of reach.
  • Olsson paced Oswego at the plate with a 3-for-5 outing that included three RBI and a run scored.
  • Luppens had a solid day in the batter's box as well, putting together a 2-for-4 effort with a run scored.
  • Rounding out the Lakers' seven hits were a hit apiece from Dellicarri and Myles Felton. Dellicarri also drew two walks, scored once and drove in another Oswego run. Felton's single came in a pinch-hit opportunity in the eighth inning with a runner on first and one out.
  • On the mound, Anthony Van Fossen went three innings in his start, allowing five runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
  • Jake Jacobs, Matt Zakala and Ronald Loomis combined to throw the next 4.1 innings, each allowing two runs apiece. Loomis tossed 2.1 of those innings and fanned three. Zakala took the loss with the eighth Trinity run coming across on his watch.
  • Ben Wilcox finished the game and did not surrender a run while scattering two hits and striking out one in 1.2 innings of work.
