Three Run Ninth Inning Sends Oswego Past WNE

LEXINGTON, S.C. – The nationally-ranked Oswego State baseball team used a three-run ninth inning to capture a comeback victory over Western New England University on Thursday afternoon. Dylan Frawley drove in the eventual game-winning run in the ninth while Ronald Loomis closed the game with a strikeout to earn the save and a Laker triumph. It was the rubber match between the two squads, giving Oswego the season series after splitting a twin bill on Tuesday.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Oswego 6, WNE 5
  • Location: Lexington County Baseball Stadium – Lexington, S.C.
  • Records: Oswego 7-4  |  WNE 4-5
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Trailing by two in the final frame, Oswego was able to garner its second lead of the game with a trio of runs.
  • After a strikeout to start the ninth, Mike Dellicarri notched a single to second base and was immediately driven in by a Lukas Olsson double to left-center. A Brandon Nicholson fielder's choice put out Olsson at third, leaving the Lakers tying run at first with two outs.
  • Casey Gruarin kept the frame alive with a single to left field, pushing Nicholson to second. Matt Deblasio entered the game for a pinch hit and loaded the bases when he was beaned. Frawley came to the dish with three hits already in the tilt and smacked another, plating Nicholson to tie the game and Gruarin for the go-ahead tally.
  • WNE made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth, placing its first two runners on base. Oswego elected to bring in Ronald Loomis from the bullpen, who forced a pop out on a bunt attempt to the first batter he faced. Loomis struck the next Golden Bear batter swinging but a wild pitch and intentional walk loaded the bases. The sophomore bounced back with the next WNE batsman, recording another swinging strikeout to end the threat and the game.
  • Oswego started the game with two runs in the first inning but the Golden Bears answered in the bottom of the frame with three runs. The Lakers knotted the game at 3-3 with a run in the third, but again WNE replied with a run of its own to go back ahead. WNE then added a run in the bottom of the seventh for the two-run cushion that the Lakers erased in their final at-bat.
  • Frawley – the Laker catcher on the afternoon – led all hitters with four hits, coming on just five plate appearances. The transfer-sophomore's two RBI on the day were the difference in the outcome.
  • The trio of Dellicarri, Gruarin and Enos finished with a pair of hits and a run scored. Dellicarri had an RBI on the day while he and Gruarin each drew a walk.
  • Finishing with a hit, a walk and two RBI was Olsson, who started at designated hitter in the matchup with WNE.
  • The final Laker with a hit on Thursday was first baseman Jonathan Luppens.
  • Paul Tammaro scored twice for Oswego, reaching base by virtue of a walk and a hit by pitch.
  • Erik Dusseldorp earned his first-collegiate win on the mound, despite only tossing one-third of an inning, allowing a hit while striking out one batter.
  • Loomis did not surrender a hit and fanned two hitters to collect his first-career save.
  • Junior Jake Terrill threw the first 6.1 frames for the Lakers, giving up five runs – only four of which were earned – while striking out seven.
  • Matt Di Salvo completed 1.1 innings in relief of Terrill, preventing any hits from the Golden Bears and sitting down two on strikes.
WHAT'S NEXT

The Lakers will have Friday off before returning to SUNYAC action in South Carolina on Saturday. Oswego will close its trip down south with a three-game league series with Brockport, starting with the first game of a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
