Two Run Ninth Inning Spoils Laker Trip to Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Oswego State baseball team was undone by two, ninth-inning runs by the host Ithaca College Bombers on Tuesday afternoon. Both teams entered the game receiving votes in the latest ABCA national poll, while the Lakers are receiving votes in the D3baseball.com rankings as well.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Ithaca 6, Oswego 5
  • Location: Freeman Field – Ithaca, N.Y.
  • Records: Ithaca 12-4   |  Oswego 12-6

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Preseason All-American Mike Dellicarri opened the game with two-out, solo shot to right field for an early 1-0 Laker lead. Lukas Olsson tripled to left center in the very next at-bat, but Oswego was unable to push Olsson the next 90 feet.
  • After holding Ithaca scoreless through the first two frames, Oswego tacked on two more runs in the third. Paul Tammaro led off the inning with a single down the left field line before sophomore Ryan Enos belted a homer to left center, making it a 3-0 Oswego advantage.
  • Ithaca cut its deficit to just one with a quick two-run answer in the bottom of the third.
  • A scoreless fourth gave way to a Laker run in the fifth when Dellicarri scored on a Brandon Nicholson single through the left side. The senior led off the inning with a double.
  • Again the Bombers responded immediately, scoring twice in the bottom of the frame to knot the game at 4-4.
  • Oswego's go-ahead run came in the sixth as Casey Gruarin opened with a triple to left center. Ryan Weiss did not waste the runner in scoring position, plating Gruarin with a single to left in the next at-bat.
  • The Lakers held Ithaca off the board for the next three at-bats but could not hold the Bombers in the final inning. A lead-off double followed by a single eventually allowed a wild pitch run and a sacrifice fly tally to steal the game.
  • Enos, Dellicarri and Weiss each had two hits to pace the Lakers.
  • On the bump, Jake Terrill started and went five innings, taking a no-decision with three strikeouts and four earned runs.
  • Kieran Finnegan relieved Terrill and tossed a clean three innings before taking the loss as he surrendered the final two runs. He only allowed four hits in 3.2 innings while fanning six Bombers.
