Early Laker Leads Do Not Hold at St. John Fisher

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The Oswego State baseball team suffered two tough losses at St. John Fisher College on Saturday afternoon. Oswego had leads early in both contests but late-game scoring gave the Cardinals a nod in each game.

THE BASICS
  • Game 1 Result: Fisher 13, Oswego 8
  • Game 2 Result: Fisher 11, Oswego 5
  • Location: Dugan Yard – Pittsford, N.Y.
  • Records: Fisher 14-7  |  Oswego 13-8
HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1
  • Oswego scored the game's first four runs with one in each of the first two innings and a pair in the third.
  • The middle three innings featured two of the region's best teams trading blows to an 8-8 tie. Fisher was able to hold the Lakers off the board in the final three frames while scoring two in the seventh and three in the eighth for the five-run win.
  • Rocco Leone and Lukas Olsson led the Lakers with three hits apiece, combing for three doubles.
  • Mike Dellicarri had a double too and also had a two-run homer to center in the sixth to extend Oswego's lead to 8-5.
  • Nick Chilson had the Lakers' fifth double of the day while Ryan Enos, Brandon Nicholson and Ryan Weiss each finished with base knocks.
  • Starting pitcher Nick DeMarco earned a no-decision in five innings of work, allowing eight hits and five runs.
  • Matt Bowman assumed the loss in two innings of relief, falling to 2-2 on the year by surrendering five hits and five runs. Kieran Finnegan tossed the final frame, allowing two runs.
Game 2
  • Oswego lit the scoreboard first with a Ryan Enos two-run shot in the third, scoring Jake Walsh, who led-off with a walk and stole second.
  • After Fisher cut the lead in half with a run in the fifth, the Lakers responded with a three-run top of the sixth.
  • With one out, Olsson reached on an error by the centerfielder and moved to second on the same error. Nicholson made it sting with a double to left to score Olsson before swiping third base.
  • Nicholson scored in the very next at-bat, as Matt Deblasio notched an RBI-single to right. After a Casey Gruarin single through the left side, Jonathan Luppens followed suit with a single in the same fashion to drive in Deblasio, giving Oswego a 5-1 advantage.
  • Fisher was able to plate a run in the bottom of the frame, two in the seventh and seven in the eighth while holding Oswego scoreless to close the outing.
  • Southpaw Brian Nolan was excellent in 6.2 innings, scattering eight hits while fanning a career-high 11 Cardinal batters, one more than his previous-career mark against St. Joseph's College (LI) on March 10, 2018.
  • Ronald Loomis fell to 0-1 on the year in a relief appearance, allowing four runs, only one of which was earned. Senior Bobby Zywicki tossed the eighth, not allowing an earned run (three unearned) while striking out two.
WHAT'S NEXT
Oswego will look to get back into the win column with a pair of home games against SUNY Canton on Sunday. Game one's first pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
