Scalzo and Terra Key in SUNYAC Opening Win

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's soccer team scored a goal in each half to beat Geneseo in its SUNYAC opener at home on Friday afternoon. In front of several former Lakers back on campus for Alumni Weekend, Kyle Scalzo notched both tallies for the home squad while Brian Terra recorded a shutout. Oswego picked up its first win over Geneseo since 2014 and earned its first home field triumph against the Knights since Oct. 5, 2002. The win evened the series between the two schools over the last eight meetings at 3-3-2.

THE BASICS
  • Result: Oswego 2, Geneseo 0
  • Location: Laker Turf Stadium – Oswego, N.Y.
  • Records: Oswego 6-3-0 (1-0-0 SUNYAC)  |  Geneseo 4-4-0 (0-1-0 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams played close in the first half with one shot on-goal apiece until the final 10 seconds when Scalzo scored his second of the year.
  • A long kick from Caleb Munski was headed by a Geneseo player between midfield and the 18-yard box. Michael Gualtieri quickly headed the ball out of midair to his right for Scalzo. The freshman chased the ball just outside the right of the arc, planted his left foot and drilled a right-footed goal in the upper-right 90 at 44:53.
  • In the 73rd minute, Scalzo was at it again, this time a beneficiary of a Jack Van Pelt assist. Ryan Young dribbled through three defenders on the left side and found Van Pelt 10-feet outside the arc. The senior sent a soft pass to Scalzo inside the box, with the East Syracuse, N.Y. native settling the ball with his left and firing with his right. Scalzo's shot made its way inside the left post and out of reach of a diving Geneseo goalkeeper for a 2-0 Laker lead.
  • From that point forward, Geneseo would put one more shot on-target with Terra making his third save of the day on the attempt. The senior moved to 5-3-0 on the year by completing his fourth shutout of the campaign.
  • Oswego outshot Geneseo 8-1 in the first half and finished with a 10-5 advantage.
  • Each team record three on-goal chances and three corner kicks.
