Lakers Fall in Overtime at Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Despite a goal and an assist from senior Josh Zizek, the Oswego State men's ice hockey team could not hold a late 2-1 lead in falling on the road to the Cortland Red Dragons in overtime by a score of 3-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cortland struck first with a goal at 9:08 of the opening period.
  • It didn't take Oswego long to answer as Zizek hammered a shot home at 10:26 on assists from Travis Broughman (8) and Carson Vance (7).
  • The goal was Zizek's sixth of the season.
  • At 13:08, Cortland took a tripping penalty that put Oswego on the power play.
  • Just eight seconds into the man-advantage, Tyson Kirkby scored his fourth goal of the season on assists from Broughman (9) and Zizek (7) to put Oswego in front, 2-1.
  • Senior David Richer made 10 stops in the first period, including a nice save on a point-blank centering pass with two minutes remaining.
  • Oswego had three more power plays in the second period and the defense played strong in front of Richer in only allowing six shots-on-goal in the period, but the period ended scoreless.
  • Cortland tied the game with just under seven minutes remaining on a tipped-in shot from the point while on the power play.
  • The Lakers had the first few chances in overtime, but with 58 seconds left in the contest, a Cortland defensemen gathered a loose puck along the far boards in the Oswego zone and snapped a shot through traffic and past Richer for the game winner.
  • Oswego nearly doubled Cortland in the faceoff circle, taking a 46-24 advantage there. Zizek won 17 and senior Anthony Passero won 12-of-16 chances. 
  • In shots-on-goal, it was a 36-28 edge to the Lakers with Broughman (5), Michael Gillespie (4), Vance (4) and Jeff Solow (4) the leaders.
  • Richer finished with 25 saves in the game.

The men are back in action tomorrow at 7 p.m. when they host SUNY Canton in the Marano Campus Center Arena.
