Lakers Hold Off Cardinals In Three-Point Battle

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's basketball team took a SUNYAC victory tonight against the Plattsburgh Cardinals by a score of 75-69. Brandan Gartland led the offense in the first half with five three-pointers to give the Lakers an advantage going into the second half. Colby Moultrie aided Oswego in the second half with eight points in the final five minutes of the game to solidify the win, including two free throws to ice the contest in the closing minute of action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Oswego started out quick in the first half, going up 7-2 at the 17:08 mark thanks to a Gartland three-pointer that finished a 5-0 run.
  • Plattsburgh came back with a 7-2 run of their own, ranging from 16:49-15:36 and tying the game at nine.
  • The Lakers and Cardinals went back-and-forth, exchanging the lead four times from 11:15-5:44 of the first half.
  • Joe Sullivan started an 8-0 run at the 5:44 mark for Oswego with a layup. The run ended with a Moultrie three-pointer at 3:35 and giving the Lakers the 31-27 lead.
  • After the Cardinals tied the game at 31, the Lakers went on an 8-3 run to finish the half, putting them up 39-34 at the break.
  • Oswego shot 50% from beyond the arc in the first half.
  • Plattsburgh made a 17-9 run to open the first five minutes of second half and took the lead with a three-pointer, putting them up 51-48.
  • Both teams exchanged baskets until the 6:47 mark of the second half when Oswego went on a 6-0 run to extend out to a lead of 67-59.
  • The Cardinals never closed to within a single possession the rest of the way.
  • Gartland finished the game with five three-pointers, leading the way for the Lakers with 22 points.
  • Sullivan had 21 points, eight rebounds and went 7-for-11 from the free throw line.
  • Jamal Achille, in 28 minutes, had nine rebounds, six points and one assist. 
  • The Lakers as a whole shot 36% from distance, including nine combined from Moultrie and Gartland.
  • They both shot 50% from the field as Gartland went 7-for-14 and Moultrie went 4-for-8.
  • Oswego took advantage of turnovers as they had 17 points directly coming from turnovers.
  • The win clinched a postseason spot for the Lakers in the upcoming six-team SUNYAC Men's Basketball Championships.
