Lakers Frozen In Overtime As They Tie Brockport

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's ice hockey team this afternoon battled hard against the Golden Eagles as they played to a 2-2 draw. With help from Travis Broughman (1G, 1A) and Michael Gillespie (2A), the Lakers grabbed a huge point in the standings as they look forward to No. 3 Geneseo tomorrow.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Oswego found themselves on the defensive side of the puck in the opening minutes of the first period as Brockport netted the first goal of the game at the 4:40 mark.
  • Ethan Solat scored his fifth goal of the season to put the Golden Eagles up 1-0 on an unassisted tally.
  • After a penalty taken by Corey Tam of Brockport, the Lakers' Alex DiCarlo continued his rampage on the power play, scoring his fifth goal in just the past three games.  
  • The goal was assisted by Gillespie and Broughman.
  • The second period started quite the same, Brockport held the offensive zone pressure in the opening minutes.
  • Broughman broke the tie at the 3:52 mark of the second period with a goal of his own. This was Broughman's twelfth goal of the season and his 23rd point, leading the Lakers in both categories.
  • The goal was assisted by Gillespie for his second point of the game and nineteenth of the season.
  • The second period continued with end-to-end action and Brockport's Robert Flannery scoring his second goal of the season in tying the game at two, with one minute remaining in the second period.
  • The game remained tied throughout the third period, sending the game to overtime.
  • The final two minutes of the third period were constant back and forth action as both teams had multiple opportunities to net one.
  • The Lakers were unable to find the back of the net as Matt Schneider made multiple saves for the Golden Eagles in the overtime period to keep the game a draw.
  • Oswego dominated the faceoff circle, winning 40 out of the 64 draws in the contest. Leading the way was Josh Zizek, who won 23 of the 33 faceoffs he attempted.
  • DiCarlo led the team in shots with nine, followed by Broughman with seven. The Lakers outshot the Golden Eagles by a margin of 39-24.
  • Steven Kozikoski remains undefeated (3-0-1) as he gathers a total of 22 saves in the contest.
WHAT'S NEXT

The Lakers will return home to take on No. 3-ranked Geneseo tomorrow February 9 at 6 p.m., following the Oswego State women's ice hockey game at 3 p.m. against the Nazareth Golden Flyers.
