Hull Completes Epic Comeback for Lakers

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's ice hockey team erased a two-goal third period deficit to mount a 5-4 comeback over NorthEast Women's Hockey League foe Cortland on the road on Friday evening.  Freshman Mack Hull had the game winner for the Lakers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The teams played a fair even first period with Cortland having a 9-8 edge in shots and Oswego a 5-4 advantage on faceoffs.
  • With just under five minutes left in the opening period, Simone Bednarik scored on an assist from sophomore Megan Teachout to give the Lakers the 1-0 lead.
  • Cortland equalized six minutes into the second period on an even-strength goal and added a second tally to take the 2-1 lead.
  • Less than a minute after their second score, they added a third goal of the period on the power play for a 3-1 lead after two periods.
  • Oswego closed the game back to one goal at 1:58 of the third period on a goal by Chyne Kennedy, assisted by Ariella Haas.
  • Just two minutes later, Cortland added their fourth goal on even strength to push back out to two goals.
  • Kyleigh Grugin cut it back to a single-goal deficit just one minute eighteen seconds later when she skated through the Red Dragon defense and took her time to slip a shot past the Cortland netminder to make it 4-3.
  • With just under 10 minutes left in the contest, freshman Lizzie Burke flew past the blue line to intercept a Cortland clear attempt, knocking the puck out wide where Morgan Shines collected it.
  • Burke continued to the Red Dragon net as Shines swung a pass in for Burke to redirect it into the net to tie the game at 4-4.
  • It was Hull from Kennedy again less than two minutes later when Hull got the puck, went out wide and down low to snap a shot past the Red Dragon goalie on the sharp angle to complete the comeback.
  • Oswego outshot the Red Dragons 29-26 and Joanna Hiebert made 22 saves in net for the Lakers.
          Through the support of Oswego Health, admission into Oswego State Women's Ice Hockey regular season home        games is free of charge for the 2021-22 season. 

WHAT'S NEXT
The Lakers are off until the new year when they travel to Amherst for a 7 p.m. contest on January 3.
