OSWEGO, N.Y. – A late third period goal helped propel the Utica Pioneers to a 3-2 victory over the Oswego State women's ice hockey team in both teams' return to action in 2022.
Mack Hull and
Kyleigh Grugin were the goal scorers for the Lakers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Period
- Just six minutes into the contest, Hull intercepted the puck in the neutral zone and weaved through the Pioneer defense and into the Oswego offensive zone.
- She cut into the middle and swung a shot under the Utica goalie for the 1-0 Laker lead.
- Sophomore Bryn White came up huge with 8:33 left in the opening period when Utica had a breakaway opportunity that White smothered to maintain the Oswego advantage.
- Intense forechecking by the Pioneers in the final minute led to a shot being steered wide and behind the net by White, but gathered by Utica's Erica Sloan.
- Sloan made a quick move around the back of the cage and scored on the wraparound shot with 30 seconds left in the stanza for her tenth goal of the season.
- Oswego had a 15-10 edge in shots-on-goal in the first period and they went 0-for-1 on the only power play.
Second Period
- In the opening minute of the middle frame, Ariella Haas and Simone Bednarik broke into the offensive zone on a two-on-one and Bednarik rifled a shot off the crossbar.
- In the middle of the period and one minute after Morgan Shines also fired a shot off the crossbar, Utica broke into their offensive zone and put a screen in front of White.
- Georgiana Santullo, who leads the nation in goals per contest, fired a shot that hit White but squirted past for a 2-1 Utica lead with 10:04 left to go.
- Hull nearly scored her second goal of the contest in the final minute as she deked her defender and skated in for a point blank shot on goal that was saved.
- Utica went 0-for-2 on the power play in the period and Oswego was 0-for-1 on their chance.
- The Lakers continued to pressure Utica with a 12-6 advantage in shots-on-goal in the period and a 27-16 total for the contest.
Third Period
- The Lakers killed off a power play early in the period and then got one of their own with nine minutes left in the contest.
- A pass to the point by Sophia Kyrkostas for a powerful one-timer from Amanda Zenstein led to a point-blank rebound opportunity for Grugin to smash home for the 2-2 tie.
- With just over two minutes left in the contest, the puck deflected off a stick in the Lakers' offensive zone, allowing Utica to break out with a two-on-one.
- Utica's Carolyn Whitney skated down the left side and fired a shot past White's right shoulder for the 3-2 lead.
- Oswego pulled the goalie with a minute left, but could not capitalize on the six-on-five.
- The Lakers finished with a 39-26 edge in shots-on-goal and White ended the contest with 23 saves.
- Utica went 0-for-3 on the power play while Oswego finished 1-for-3.
