Cardinal Score Three Late Goals to Escape Upset

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's ice hockey team tied the game at 2-2 in the third period on a Kyleigh Grugin power play goal but No. 2 Plattsburgh answered with a trio of goals to escape with a 5-2 win.  Morgan Shines scored the other goal for the Lakers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Plattsburgh scored the first two goals of the contest behind a 12-7 edge in shots-on-goal in the opening period.
  • Oswego answered 54 seconds into the second period when Simone Bednarik forechecked the puck and swung a pass to Shines who had drifted to an open area right in front of the Cardinal net and one-timed it home.
  • The Lakers held an 8-6 edge in shots-on-goal during the period.
  • Just 4:37 into the final stanza, Amanda Zenstein shot a puck on net during a Laker power play and Kyleigh Grugin was first to the rebound and snuck it past the Cardinal goalie.
  • Sophomore Megan Teachout added an assist on the Grugin goal.
  • Plattsburgh used a three-on-two odd-woman rush to answer 1:20 later and a two-on-one rush two minutes after that to regain a two-goal lead.
  • With just under three minutes remaining and during a delayed penalty on the Lakers, Plattsburgh used a six-on-five opportunity to throw a shot on-goal that was pushed wide and then shot home from the wide angle for the 5-2 lead.
  • The Cardinal finished with a 29-24 edge in shots-on-goal while Oswego won 31 faceoffs to 24 for Plattsburgh.
  • Oswego held Plattsburgh's nationally-ranked power play unit to 0-for-3 during the afternoon while going 1-for-3 with their own nationally-ranked unit.
  • Sophomore Joanna Hiebert made 24 saves in net for the Lakers.
  • NEWHL teams are still trying to solve Plattsburgh as they improve to 57-0-1 since the formation of the conference prior to the 2017-18 season.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Lakers return to home ice tomorrow at 3 p.m. with another critical NEWHL matchup with 10-2 Cortland.
