Lakers Split, Championship Decided Saturday

OSWEGO, N.Y. – In a battle of the top-ranked and third-ranked teams in the New York Region, the Lakers and Red Dragons split a pair of close games to force a winner-take-all SUNYAC Championship Final on Saturday starting at 12 p.m. at Cortland's Robert H. Wallace Field.

  • Location:  Robert H. Wallace '53 Field, Cortland, N.Y.
  • Records:  Oswego 24-4 | Cortland 26-6
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • Cortland went up 2-0 right off the bat before RBI hits from Hunter Holliday and Julian Drew tied it at 2-2 through two innings.
  • In the fifth, senior Ryan Enos doubled home Paul Tammaro to put Oswego up 3-2.
  • The Red Dragons responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 5-3.
  • Oswego chipped away in the seventh on a Kyle Lauria single to score Tammaro.
  • In the eighth, Myles Felton scored on a failed pickoff of Tammaro before RBI hits from Brendon Frank and Enos made it 7-5 for the Lakers.
  • Things got interesting for senior Mike Di Salvo in the ninth with a leadoff homer and a two-out bases loaded situation, but he worked out of it by inducing a flyout to earn his first save of the season.
  • The entire top of the order (Tammaro, Frank, Enos and Lauria) went 2-for-5 in the game
  • Anthony VanFossen (5-0) pitched three and a third of an inning for the win, allowing no hits and striking out two.
Game 2
  • Cortland raced out to a 4-0 lead through one inning.
  • Oswego countered in the second when Connor Stanton doubled home Felton and Jacob Levine.
  • An RBI single by Frank in the third and homer by Felton in the fourth tied the game at 4-4.
  • A Ryan Weiss two-run homerun in the fifth put Oswego up for the first time in the contest.
  • Tammaro made it three straight innings with homers for the Lakers as they pushed out to a 7-4 lead through the top of the sixth.
  • Cortland responded with a pair of homeruns in the bottom half, the second a two-run shot, to tie the game back up at seven.
  • The Red Dragons would plate three more in their half of the seventh to go up 10-7.
  • RBI's from catcher Dylan Frawley and Frank would cut it to 10-9 heading into the ninth.
  • A single from Lauria and a stolen base set the table for Weiss who delivered the RBI single to tie the game up.
  • In the bottom of the tenth, a one-out homerun tied the series and sent the Championship to a deciding game.
  • Frank went 4-for-4 in the game while Weiss was 4-for-5 and Stanton 3-for-4.
  • VanFossen (5-1) took the loss despite just allowing the one hit over two and a third of an inning.
