Volleyball Beats Gators, Fall to Mustangs

OSWEGO, N.Y. – For the second straight day, the Oswego State volleyball team split a pair of matches against opponents at the Morrisville State Tournament.  Oswego fell in a tough five-setter to kick off the morning and rebounded to defeat the Sage College by a 3-1 match score.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Match 1 – Morrisville State
  • The Mustang defense held the Lakers to just 10 kills through the opening two sets as the hosts went up 2-0.
  • In the third and fourth sets, Oswego posted 19 kills while forcing 17 Morrisville attacking errors to tie the match and force a deciding set.
  • Morrisville raced out to an 8-4 lead before Oswego closed it to 12-10 late in the set on a Dana Carey kill.
  • The teams traded point before an attacking error concluded the match.
  • It was a tough serving match with Morrisville recording 15 aces and Oswego 14, led by junior McKenna Corbin and sophomore Ally Natale's three apiece.
  • Freshman Cara Simplicio led the Oswego offense with nine kills and fellow freshman Madison Gordon had a team-best 11 digs.
Match 2 – Sage
  • Junior Emma Fiorentine had a match-high 14 kills while hitting .323 for Oswego and adding three blocks.
  • Sophomore Grace Taylor hit .545 with six kills on 11 swings.
  • Corbin had 24 assists and Carey 15 while senior Skylar Bechard led all defenders with 23 digs.
WHAT'S NEXT
Oswego will head north for matches against St. Lawrence, Clarkson and SUNY Canton next weekend.
