Volleyball Splits Matches at Morrisville

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. - The Oswego State volleyball team split a pair of matches on Friday evening at the Morrisville State Tournament.  The Lakers defeated Hood College in five sets before falling to Hartwick in straight sets.  Sophomore Georgia Farry led the Lakers with 13 kills in the win over Hood.

  • Final Scores:  Oswego 3, Hood 2 (25-27, 25-23, 16-25, 29-27, 15-6) ; Hartwick 3, Oswego 0 (21-25, 16-25, 22-25)

  • Records:  Oswego (2-1), Hartwick (2-1), Hood (0-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Match 1 - Hood
  • In the opener against Hood, the Lakers and Blazers each took a close set to keep things even.
  • Aggressive serving by Hood in the third set led to a 2-1 deficit for the Lakers.
  • Freshmen Cara Simplicio's six kills and classmate Emily Zeisler's four helped Oswego push the match to a fifth.
  • Three blocks from junior Emma Fiorentine and Grace Taylor, and a seven-point run by senior Dana Carey helped propel the Lakers to victory.
  • Senior Skylar Bechard notched 35 digs in the match, third-best in program history for a single match total.
  • Junior McKenna Corbin led Oswego with 42 assists and freshman outside hitter Madison Gordon had seven kills and 15 digs.
  • Simplicio ended with a double-double on 12 kills and 13 digs.
Match 2- Hartwick
  • Oswego got down early by a score of 15-6 before four-point service runs by Corbin and sophomore Kaylee Troy closed the gap back to 17-18.
  • A pair of blocks by Fiorentine and Taylor was not enough to offset a 7-4 run down the stretch by Hartwick.
  • In the second set, Hartwick used a 7-2 run in the middle of the set to cruise to a 25-16 win.
  • Bechard served a pair of aces to put Oswego up 20-19 in the third set and a pair of kills by Gordon and Farry made it 22-22.
  • Two kills and an ace gave the Hawks the match victory.
  • Simplicio, Farry, and sophomore Olivia Bunn each led Oswego with six kills.
  • Bechard had a team-high 12 digs and three aces.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Lakers return to Morrisville tomorrow to face off against the home school at 11 a.m. and at 1 p.m. against Sage.
