No. 2 Cardinals Overcome Strong Laker Start

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's ice hockey team got the perfect start with a three-goal opening period, but could not hold off No. 2 Plattsburgh in a 6-3 road defeat.  It was the second time in the past week that the Lakers were neck-and-neck with the Cardinals heading into the final frame, tying last Friday's home contest at 2-2, before Plattsburgh pulled away late for victory.

  • Location:  Ronald B. Stafford Arena, Plattsburgh, N.Y.
  • Records:  Plattsburgh 13-2 (10-0 NEWHL), Oswego 8-5-1 (5-4-1 NEWHL)
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Plattsburgh outshot Oswego 12-to-6 in the opening frame, but Bryn White kept the hosts off the scoreboard and it appeared that the Cardinals' 59-game unbeaten streak in NEWHL play was in some jeopardy.
  • With 7:08 left in the second period, the Cardinal broke through with an even-strength goal to make it 3-1.
  • The hosts scored a goal with 44 seconds left in the second period to cut the lead back to 3-2 heading to the final period.
  • Plattsburgh held a 13-to-2 edge in shots-on-goal in the second period.
  • Just one minute into the third period, Plattsburgh tied the game on a Nicole Unsworth goal, her tenth of the season.
  • Eight minutes later, the Cardinal took their first lead of the contest with a shorthanded goal and added an insurance goal with just under five minutes to play.
  • Scoring ended with an empty-net tally with 58 second remaining from Plattsburgh's Annie Katonka, their leading goal scorer.
  • Oswego finished 1-for-3 on the power play and held Plattsburgh to 0-for-2 on the woman advantage.
