Broughman Nets Three in Victory Over Red Dragons

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's ice hockey team continued their SUNYAC schedule tonight, defeating the Red Dragons of Cortland by a score of 5-3. Senior Travis Broughman added a hat-trick with the first, fourth (game-winning) and fifth (empty-net) goals for the Lakers.

HOW IT HAPPENED

 
  • Right after an Oswego powerplay, the Red Dragons scored their first goal of the game to take the early lead.
  • After the Lakers got out of a 5-on-4 situation, two minutes later, Broughman added the equalizer, assisted by Alex DiCarlo and Connor Sleeth.
  • The remainder of the period went scoreless.
  • After end-to-end action the Red Dragons broke the tie once again 4:38 into the second stanza.
  • Lakers stuck back just under two minutes later to knot the game at two. Tommy Cahill scored the second tally, assisted by Mac Lewis, his first of the night.
  • Oswego took their turn breaking the tie at 9:38 into the second period, Garrett Clegg found the twine, again assisted by Lewis.
  • The Red Dragons tied the game for the third and final time at the 14:44 mark of the middle stanza on the power-play.
  • The period ended at three's.
  • In the third period the teams were back-and-forth in the neutral zone with only five stoppages in play in the first seven minutes of the final frame.
  • At 7:16, Broughman scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal, assisted by DiCarlo and Quinn Warmuth.
  • Laker defense stood tall in the final minutes of the third period as Cortland pulled their goalie at 19:14, Broughman collected the hats with an empty-netter with just 42 seconds remaining.
Key Statistics
  • Shots on-goal went to the Red Dragons 30-24
  • Kozikoski finished with 27 saves on the night to earn his tenth win of the 2021-22 campaign.
  • The faceoff battle was tight, but went to the Lakers 38-36. Sleeth led in faceoffs with 13 wins, followed by Conor Smart (10), Shane Bull (8), Cahil (6-2), and Jackson Arcan (1).

Oswego heads back home to the Deborah F. Stanley Arena to take on another SUNYAC foe, the Blue Devils of Fredonia. The game is set for a 7pm puck drop tomorrow 1/29.
