Women's Basketball Stuns Oneonta, 49-46

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's basketball took down Oneonta by a score of 49-46 for their first SUNYAC win of the season.  A strong push from the three-point line in the second quarter put the Lakers ahead and their defense held the Red Dragons scoreless in the final 2:38 to secure the win.  Oneonta entered the contest sitting third in the SUNYAC standings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Oneonta tried to pull away early with a 7-2 lead five minutes into the contest.
  • Freshman Shania Iglesias entered and scored seven points and classmate Logan Nyemchek added a bucket to give Oswego an 11-9 lead after one quarter.
  • The Red Dragons started the second quarter on an 8-0 run to go up 17-11 just two minutes in.
  • Sophomore Chastin Giles hit the first of six three pointers in the quarter for the Lakers to help them keep the lead at 29-27 at the break.
  • Iglesias and senior Danielle Caivana had a pair buckets from distance and Nyemchek hit the other one.
  • Oswego then outscored Oneonta in the third quarter 14-12 to go up four heading into the final stanza.
  • After a Red Dragon score, freshman Diamond Pickett hit a three pointer and a layup to extend the Laker lead to seven with six minutes to play at 48-41.
  • From there, the defense held Oneonta to just five points to secure the win.
  • Iglesias finished with 16 points while Caivana and Pickett had eight each.
  • Pickett added nine rebounds, four assists and four steals to her stat line.
  • Freshman Laila Elor held Oneonta's top scorer to just a single bucket in the fourth quarter after she put up 15 points in the previous three.
  • The difference in the game was the 9-0 advantage in three pointers for the Lakers.

The Lakers take on New Paltz at 2 p.m. tomorrow in Max Ziel Gymnasium.
