Women's Basketball's Tight Battle to New Paltz Falls Short

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's basketball team lost a hard-fought battle against the now 13-5 Hawks of New Paltz. The Lakers kept the Hawks on the ropes the entire game, tying the contest six times and leading for more than five minutes against the SUNYAC's second-ranked squad. The Lakers held the second-ranked scoring offense in the conference to 60 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
1st Quarter
  • Early in the quarter, the Lakers went on a 5-0 run to give them the 5-2 lead.
  • From here, the Hawks and Lakers went back and forth, with 2:40 remaining the score was knotted at 10.
  • With multiple stops on each side, neither team was able to capitalize on the offensive,the score remained tied at ten going into the second stanza.
2nd Quarter
  • The Hawks began the quarter with a 9-0 run, ending at 6:54 with a three-pointer from Danielle Caivana.
  • Closing out the quarter the Lakers went on a 9-2 run of their own, bringing them back within four with 31 seconds remaining in the half.
  • Oswego at half shot 50% from beyond the arc (5-10), compared to the Hawks' 33.3% (4-12).
3rd Quarter
  • At the 8:22 mark, Diamond Pickett started an offensive frenzy for both teams. Both teams taking advantage of their offesnsive chances. 
  • Down 37-30 with 6:38 remaining, Danielle Caivana initiated a 7-0 for the Lakers, Elaina Johnson tied the game with 4:51 remaining.
  • The Hawks went on a 5-0 run to break the tie, ending at 2:21 with a field goal by Logan Castiglione, bringing the green and gold back within three (42-39).
  • At the end of the quarter, the Lakers trailed by only four points (45-41).
  • Oswego shot 58.3% from the field compared to New Paltz' 35.7%.
  • They also out-shot the Hawks from beyond the arc in the third quarter, 54.4% to 35%.
4th Quarter
  • The Hawks extended their lead, going on a 5-0 run in the first minute (48-41).
  • Oswego didn't let the lead get out of reach as they went on their own 7-0 run to cut the lead to two points (50-48). 
  • New Paltz scored six quick points, bringing their lead back to eight (56-48).
  • Shania Iglesias and Caivana combined to bring the lead back to five for the Hawks with 3:16 remaining.
  • The game went scoreless until Caivana hit a free throw at 1:52 and a three to bring the Lakers within one with 58 seconds remaining.
  • With 13 seconds remaining the Hawks laid one in to give them the three-point lead.
Key Statistics
  • Caivana led the Lakers with 19 points, going 7-15 from the field and 4-5 from range in 36 minutes.
  • Iglesias concluded the contest with 12 points, going 3-4 from beyond the arc.
  • As a team the Lakers shot 52.9% from three-point range compared to New Paltz' 30.4%.
  • Oswego won the defensive rebound battle 28-23.
  • The overall rebound battle resulted in a tie 40-40.
