Lakers Sweep Wildcats In Non-Conference Matchup

OSWEGO, N.Y.  –  The Oswego State Volleyball team hosted the SUNY Poly Wildcats this evening. The Lakers had a scare in the final set, but handled the Wildcats, sweeping them in 3 sets. 

THE BASICS

Final Score: Oswego State 3 (16-8, 4-3 SUNYAC), Poly 0 (0-21, 0-4 NAC) (25-13, 25-16, 25-22)

Location: Max Ziel Gymnasium, Oswego, NY

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Lakers came out strong in the first set, going on a 8-0 run before the Wildcats would take a timeout. 

  • McKenna Corbin would have 3 aces on that run. 

  • The Wildcats could't find their groove against the Lakers in the first set as the Lakers won 25-13

  • Leading the Lakers in attacks was Emma Fiorentine, with 9 in the first set. Fiorentine also recorded 5 kills in set 1. Ally Natale led the team with 5 digs in set 1. McKenna Corbin recorded 7 assists in the first set. 

  • Poly would find their groove in the second set, sticking with the Lakers and getting their first lead of the night. 

  • Around the halfway point of the set, Oswego started to pull away from the WIldcats, eventually winning 25-16.

  • Sydney Chiffriller led the Lakers with 11 attacks, 4 digs,  and 5 kills in the second set. Corbin recorded 5 more assists as well in set 2. 

  • Poly still couldn't get anything going against the Lakers in the third set. Oswego jumped out to a 7-2 lead behind 4 aces by Cara Simplicio

  • The Wildcats were able to bounce back and cut the deficit to 2. Poly was unable to regroup once they fell behind, but they refused to give up. 

  • The Lakers took the third set 25-22, Poly gave Oswego a good fight in the last set. The Laker's simply outmatched the Wildcats.

  • Georgia Farry led the Lakers in kills in the final set, with 9; Simplicio added 4 more aces; Sarah Stratton added 5 digs as well.

WHAT'S NEXT

The women will travel to New Paltz to face the Hawks on Friday, October 21st. The Lakers are hoping to earn their 5th conference win of the season.
