Women's Basketball Moves to 7-0, Defeating Blue Devils

OSWEGO, N.Y.  –  The Oswego State Women's Basketball team defeated the Fredonia Blue Devils in a back and forth game that saw the Lakers pull away in the fourth quarter. Some timely three point shooting from Logan Castiglione, Chastin Giles, and the leading scorer, Karleigh Leo, put the game out of reach for good.

THE BASICS

Final Score: Oswego State 76 (7-0, SUNYAC 1-0), Fredonia 66 (3-3, SUNYAC 0-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Oswego led after the first quarter by a score of 19-15. Karleigh Leo led the Lakers with 10 points.

  • The Lakers shot 46.7% from the field in the first quarter.

  • The Lakers lost the lead in the second, and trailed by two points entering the third.

  • Oswego still had a higher FG% than the Blue Devils, shooting 36.4% from the field.

  • In the third quarter, the Lakers managed to steal some momentum from the Blue Devils, and took back the lead in a high-scoring quarter, 56-53.

  • Halfway through the third quarter, Karleigh Leo had 13 points, Diamond Pickett had 12, and Shania Iglesias had 10.

  • Entering the fourth quarter, Diamond Pickett led the Lakers with 16 points.

  • Early in the fourth, Logan Castiglione and Chastin Giles hit back-to-back threes to extend the lead to eight.

  • Later on in the quarter, Karleigh Leo hit a three to put the lead at 10. The shot forced the Blue Devils to call a timeout with 4:27 remaining.

  • With under two minutes remaining, Fredonia began to foul, and the Lakers hit their free throws down the stretch to keep the game out of reach. At the final buzzer, Oswego walked away with the win, 76-66.

  • Karleigh Leo led the Lakers in scoring with 23. Shania Iglesias, Chastin Giles, and Diamond Pickett all scored in double-figures for Oswego.

  • While Fredonia's volume three point shooting kept them in the game, Oswego shot much more accurately from the field at 43.9%.

  • The Lakers out rebounded Fredonia 52-35, and shot significantly better from the free throw line, sinking 19 of 22 shots from the line.

WHAT'S NEXT

The women will host SUNY Brockport on December 2, and will look to continue their undefeated start to the season. The Lakers will also look to repeat their stellar performance from the free throw line.
