Lakers Suffer First Loss of Season to Golden Eagles

OSWEGO, N.Y.  –  The Oswego State Women's Basketball team had their second conference matchup of the season this evening, hosting the Brockport Golden Eagles. Brockport was able to hold off the Lakers and give them their first loss of the season. 

THE BASICS

Final Score: Oswego State 60 (7-1, 1-1 SUNYAC), Brockport 75 (3-2, 2-0 SUNYAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first quarter proved to be a defensive matchup, as the Lakers forced several missed shots by the Eagles offense. The Lakers held Brockport to just a 23.8 field goal percentage in the first quarter of play.

  • The contest was tied at 12 going into the second quarter of play.

  • Oswego was able to find some rhythm in the second quarter, hitting a pair of three point shots early in the quarter. 

  • The Laker defense continued to clamp down on Brockport's offense, forcing them to miss five consecutive three point attempts in the quarter.

  • Brockport was able to find success down low in the paint and at the free throw line, which helped give them a 32-27 lead over the Lakers going into halftime. 

  • Karleigh Leo and Shania Iglesias led Oswego at the half with eight points for Leo and seven for Iglesias. Diamond Pickett led the Lakers with four rebounds at the half. Logan Castiglione, Logan Nyemchek, and Julia Logana each added 2 assists to tie for the lead at the half. 

  • Brockport continued to put the pressure on the Lakers in the third quarter. The Golden Eagles were able to build a 12 point lead before Oswego would rally back and cut the deficit to just four. 

  • Brockport would then go on a 7-0 run to give them a 50-39 lead over Oswego. Shania Iglesias would hit a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to just nine going into the final quarter. 

  • The Lakers were unable to rally back from the deficit, as the Golden Eagles were able to extend their lead through the final ten minutes of play. 

  • Brockport would win by 15 points, winning by a score of 75-60. 

  • Leading for the Lakers in points was Karleigh Leo, with a total of 19 points, hitting three three-point shots. Logan Castiglione added 17 points for the Lakers this evening. 

  • Diamond Pickett led Oswego with ten rebounds and four assists on the evening. 

WHAT'S NEXT

The Lakers will travel to Buffalo State tomorrow afternoon to take on the Bengals at 2pm. Oswego looks to rebound from their first loss of the season while the Bengals are looking to turn things around and get back in the win column.
