Cortland Takes Down Lakers In Wrestling, 32-12

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State wrestling team got wins from senior Isaac Mathews and sophomores Anthony Cascen and Thomas Coll, but fell in dual meet action against Cortland by a 32-12 team score on Saturday.

  • Final Score:  Cortland 32, Oswego 12
  • Location:  Corey Gymnasium, Park Center, Cortland, N.Y.
  • Records:  Cortland 6-1, Oswego 3-5
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The coaches shifted lineups to feature the two nationally ranked wrestlers in Charlie Grygas (seventh) and Demitreus Henry (eighth) in the final matchup of the day in the 174-pound weight class.
  • Starting at 184, Cortland took the 3-0 lead in the match with a 7-1 decision versus sophomore Bryce Smith.
  • Cascen tied the match at 3-3 with a 10-4 win by decision at 197 over Roman Jellick.
  • The Red Dragons added a technical fall (five points), two wins by fall (six points each) and a forfeit (six points) across the next four matches to pull away.
  • Senior Logan McGloine wrestled well in a 4-2 decision setback to Chandler Merwin at 149 as Merwin appears just outside the top-10 D3Wrestle.com rankings at that weight.
  • Coll followed up his Wednesday win by major decision with a win by fall (1:41) at 157 today.
  • Mathews then added an 8-5 decision to conclude the Laker scoring.
  • The final match was a rematch of the New York State Championship match from Nov. 20 where Grygas defeated Henry by a 6-4 score in sudden victory.
  • This time, Henry eked out the 3-2 win by decision to hand Grygas just his second loss of the season (22-2).
  • In exhibition matches prior to the main event, senior Nicolai Celestain won an 11-4 decision and junior Colby Harblin won a 2-0 decision.
  • After the match, Cortland swept the exhibition action against Kian Pacheco (8-0), Damani Johnson (Fall, 1:10), Steven Felice (2-1) and Harblin (6-4).
WHAT'S NEXT
Oswego will travel to Allentown (Pa.) next Saturday for the Mideast Futures Tournament starting at 9 a.m. at Muhlenberg College.
