Baseball Downs Cardinals In Opening Day of Tournament

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State Baseball team took on Plattsburgh State in their first game of the double elimination SUNYAC Championship tournament. The Lakers got down early then didn't look back. The Green and Gold took down the 4-seeded Cardinals by a score of 15-2.  

THE BASICS

Records: #11 Oswego State (29-8, SUNYAC 16-2), Plattsburgh State (21-18, SUNYAC 7-11)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Cardinals got out to an early lead in the top half of the first inning.
  • On a sac fly after putting three straight batters on base, the Cardinals took the 1-0 lead. 
  • The Lakers took after the Cardinals as they put their first four batters on base.
  • With a Kyle Lauria single to third base, the Lakers and Cardinals were tied at 1. 
  • Ryan Weiss then brought in Ryan Enos with a sacrifice fly to left field. 
  • The third inning was a huge inning for the Lakers as they scored five runs, extending their lead to 7-1. 
  • Lukas Olsson started the rally, getting on base by an error. 
  • Next up, Lauria doubled to center field, scoring OIsson. 
  • Weiss then doubled, collecting his second RBI of the contest. 
  • Julian Drew then singled with a bunt, advancing Weiss to third. 
  • Jacob Levine singled to right field, scoring Weiss to make the contest 5-1.
  • Christian McCarthy kept the rally going, singling to shortstop. 
  • Blake VanDreason then flied out to center field, scoring Drew from third base for the SAC Fly.
  • Tammaro added another single in the game, loading the bases for Enos.
  • Enos drew the walk, creating the 7-1 lead for the top-seeded Lakers.
  • In the top of the fifth the Cardinals added a run, bringing the Laker lead for 7-2. 
  • After a one, two, three inning in the top of the sixth inning for Oswego, the bats got going once again. 
  • Olsson continued to be a force to be reckoned with at the plate, lasering a homerun to center field to bring the Lakers to eight runs. 
  • Lauria got on by a single opposite field to the righty. 
  • After a Lauria stolen base, Weiss continued to have himself a day with a two-run homerun to bring in Lauria for the 10-2 lead. 
  • After a Drew walk, Tishawn Featherstone singled up the middle, advancing Drew to scoring position on second. 
  • Christian McCarthy singled to first base, bringing in Drew and advancing Featherstone. 
  • After a throw down to second on an steal attempt from McCarthy, Featherstone scored on an error, creating a 12-2 lead for the home team. 
  • The Lakers scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to bring the contest to 14-2. 
  • Lauria earned an RBI SAC Fly, scoring Enos and Sam Allen scored on a wild pitch in the inning. 
  • Allen brought in the Lakers final run of the contest in the bottom of the eighth inning with a single to center field, scoring Aiden Gallagher. 

Final Stats

Tammaro continued to soar his nationally-ranked batting average, going 3-5 with a run in the contest. 

Lauria resulted in a 3-4 day at the plate, scoring two runs and collecting three RBI's

Weiss also had a day at the plate, going 2-3 with four RBI's. 

WHAT'S NEXT

The Lakers will take on the 2-seeded Cortland Red Dragons, the two winners of today's contests.. The game is set for a 1:00pm first pitch after Plattsburgh and Brockport battle it out with elimination on the line.
