Lakers Downed in SUNYAC Championship Rematch

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State Men's Soccer team suffered a SUNYAC loss to the Cortland Red Dragons this afternoon by a score of 5-2. The Lakers first half defensive struggles allowed for the Red Dragons to get the upper hand early and secure a win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The beginning of the first half was competitive as each team had great possessions in their offensive zones.

  • Oswego was able to get the first shots off of the game, but just missed on each attempt.

  • Cortland built momentum early in the first half as they netted in their first goal of the day. Minutes later, Cortland tacked on another goal as they found their way past the Lakers defense. 

  • Towards the end of the half, the Lakers were able to get three shots up, but were unable to get on the board.

  • The score at the half was 5-0 in Cortland's favor. 

  • In hopes to lessen the offensive threat of Cortland, Oswego State put in Freshmen goalkeeper Andre Bourjolly at the start of the second half.

  • The Lakers had a chance in the second half to decrease the deficit as they drew a penalty in the 63rd minute. Caleb Munski took the PK for the Lakers, but the Red Dragons' goalkeeper was able to prevent the goal.

  •  The Lakers got on the board as Kieran Gilroy was able to find the back of the net in the 67th minute.

  • Building on that momentum, Brendan Murphy punched in another goal for the Lakers in the 70th minute.

  • For the remainder of the half, the Lakers were able to get four shots on goal hoping to inch closer to the Red Dragons' lead, but were unsuccessful.

  • Kieran Gilroy led the Lakers with three shots. 

  • Matt D'Arpino finished the game with five saves in the net for Oswego.

 

WHAT'S NEXT

Oswego will travel east to Utica, N.Y. as they will take on the Utica University Pioneers for a non-conference matchup which will take place on Wednesday, September 28 for a 4:00PM start.
