Men's Basketball Defeats SUNYAC Rival Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y.  –  The Oswego State Men's Basketball team defeated the Cortland Red Dragons to convincingly take the top spot in the SUNYAC Conference. Joey Rowback continued his hot shooting from three-point range and Jeremiah Sparks led the Lakers in scoring with 21.

THE BASICS

Final Score: Oswego State 86 (13-2, SUNYAC 7-1), Cortland 63 (12-4, SUNYAC 7-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Lakers had a dominant first half, outscoring Cortland 44-24.

  • Jeremiah Sparks had an impressive first three minutes, scoring ten points over that short stretch of time.

  • Cartier Bowman put together a good first half as well, scoring seven points.

  • Oswego shot the ball at a 50% pace in the first half, including going 7-13 from three point range. Cortland could not answer Oswego's accuracy, shooting just 31% from the field.

  • Oswego only turned the ball over twice in the first half, and had four steals.

  • The second half was much closer, and Cortland slightly ate into the Laker lead, but Sparks and Devin Green kept the Lakers firmly in front, scoring 11 points each in the final 20 minutes.

  • Sparks ended the game with 21 points, and Green with 16.

  • Joey Rowback went 3-3 from three-point range in the game, continuing his accurate shooting from his 8-13 performance against Geneseo. He joined Jamal Achille and Ahkee Anderson in scoring nine points.

  • Bowman had ten points as well.

  • While Oswego shot the ball slightly less effectively in the second half, they still went 48.4% from the field.

  • Oswego had 20 assists, and only turned the ball over four times. They also scored 10 points off of Cortland turnovers.

WHAT'S NEXT

The men will travel to Oneonta to face the Red Dragons on January 20, and look to increase their advantage at the top of the SUNYAC Conference.
