Men's Basketball Wins Decisively Against New Paltz 106-75

NEW PALTZ, N.Y.  –  The Oswego State Men's Basketball team defeated the New Paltz Hawks on Saturday, continuing a dominant start to the season. Their eleventh straight victory kept them relatively even with SUNY Brockport atop the SUNYAC standings.

THE BASICS

Final Score: Oswego State 106 (15-2, SUNYAC 9-1), New Paltz 75 (8-8, SUNYAC 6-4)

Location: Hawk Center, New Paltz, NY

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first half was the difference in the game. Ahkee Anderson had one of his signature hot stretches to start the game, scoring the first six Laker points.

  • Just under halfway through the first half, Kaleb Cook hit two quick threes to give himself six points in the first ten minutes. New Paltz had a few costly turnovers during that stretch, and what was once a two point lead for the Hawks became an eight-point deficit in the span of two minutes.

  • Cook continued his great shooting, scoring 13 of the Lakers' next 15 points, giving him 19 for the half (and the game).

  • The first half of the game, with both hot stretches from Anderson and Cook, demonstrated the Laker ability to quickly recognize and feed the hot hand.

  • The Hawks had no answer for the Lakers' shooting in the first half, making 33% of their shots to the Lakers 62.5% shooting.

  • At the start of the second half, Cartier Bowman had the hot hand, scoring 10 of the Lakers' first 16 points in the opening five minutes.

  • Bowman added four more points as the half progressed toward ten minutes remaining. Joey Rowback added a few three-pointers as well.

  • Jeremiah Sparks and Devin Green also had good games from start to finish, and Sean Edwards scored six points over the final few minutes.

  • The Hawks played much more evenly with the Lakers in the second half, and while much of their 52 second-half points came in the late stages of the game, the Lakers kept New Paltz from clawing back into the game.

  • Cook led the Lakers in scoring, with all 19 of his points coming in the first half. Bowman had 17, while Sparks and Anderson had 15 points apiece. Devin Green also had nine for the game.

WHAT'S NEXT

The men will travel to Geneseo on Tuesday, January 24 for a matchup with the Knights, and will look to repeat their performance from January 7 and sweep Geneseo for the season.
