Lakers Upset #4 Utica

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Oswego Men's Hockey returned to home ice for their second competition of the weekend against 4th ranked Utica University. The Lakers outshot the Pioneers 27-23 and would come away with a massive 3-2 upset win in a tightly contested matchup.

THE BASICS

Final Score: Oswego 3 (8-5-0, 6-2-0 SUNYAC), Utica 2 (6-2-3, 5-0-1 UCHC)
Location: Deborah F. Stanley Arena and Convocation Hall | Oswego, N.Y.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first period provided some early excitement for the crowd on Saturday evening, as freshman Cam Symons netted his first career goal at the 2:04 mark of the first period, to give Oswego a 1-0 lead.

  • The Pioneers would respond 12 minutes later by way of Aiden Hughes to even the score.

  • Despite physical play, neither team found itself in the penalty box throughout the entirety of the first and into the second, even at one apiece.

  • When the first powerplay opportunity came for the Lakers, senior Shane Bull made the most of it, burying a goal at 15:14 into the second period.

  • Utica had a man-up advantage towards the end of the period as well, one that turned into a 5-on-3 advantage over the final seconds of the second frame.

  • The Pioneers opened the third on the advantage and put a pair of unsuccessful shots on net. Less than six minutes later, Oswego extended their lead to 3-1 with an unassisted tally by Senior Tyler Flack

  • While Michael Herrera of Utica trimmed the Pioneers' deficit to one goal with a score at 14:06 into the third, the Lakers defense held steady to maintain their lead for the upset victory.
